If great rock 'n' roll is made from great tragedy -- well, the Charlatans have never lacked for material. Their original keyboardist got mixed up in an armed robbery, went to prison, then died in a drunk driving accident shortly after his release. Then their beloved drummer collapsed on stage in Philadelphia and later died of brain cancer. But if they've been haunted by tragedy, they have also enjoyed spectacular success, from the group's No. 1 debut Some Friendly in 1990 through the next 25 years of gold albums. With a sound that blended elements of psychedelia, "Madchester" energy, and '60s-style garage rock, the Charlatans charted hits like "The Only One I Know," "Can't Get Out Of Bed" and "North Country Boy" while opening for the Who and the Stones. Now the band Rolling Stone calls "England's most assured purveyors of soulful Brit-rock" headlines the Howard Theatre.
