The American Hiking Society's National Trails Day is on June 4 this year, and events will take place in every state on that day to commemorate the centenary of the founding of the National Park Service. Washington Walks invites D.C. residents and visitors to walk America's magnificent esplanade, the National Mall, from one end to the other -- from the U.S. Capitol to the Abraham Lincoln Memorial -- a distance just over two miles. In between these two icons of democracy are towering elm trees, Smithsonian museums, gardens containing sculptures and plants, reflecting pools and fountains, memorials and one 555-foot-tall monument. Although well-known and well-trod, less familiar aspects of the National Mall await discovery, as do stories about the Mall's history and ever-changing character. Your knowledgable tour guides will share all this and more during this three-hour stroll through America's front yard.
