The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial is located on the National Mall between the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials and adjacent to the FDR Memorial. King is only one of four non-Presidents to have received such an honor, and the only African-American with a memorial in his honor on the Mall. Dedicated on August 28, 2011, the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial's opening ceremony was scheduled to coincide with the anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legendary "I Have a Dream" speech. The street address of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial is 1964 Independence Ave., SW, Washington, DC, the street number of 1964 refers to the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The location of the memorial is also a tribute to one of the most important moments of King's life and legacy. It was on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial that King gave his "I Have a Dream" speech as part of the Civil Rights March on Washington D.C. in 1963. Today, the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial stands next to the Lincoln Memorial and will have a towering 30-foot statue of King by the artist Lei Yixin and a 450-foot wall capturing highlights of King's writings and speeches.
